After taking some time off I'm back taking more pictures.

We are at Bosque del Apache again, a little late this year.

We are not finding many birds, but we will keep trying.

Here I was at Bosque del Apache looking for Sandhill Cranes and found this Ring-Necked Pheasant.

As I travel in New Mexico I am amazed at the things I see, I hope you enjoy them also.

This picture was taken while driving on highway 54 in New Mexico, I call it "Phone Service".

I found this Moth on a wall at Manzano Mt. state park, the Ranger said they were laying their eggs.

Z is for zabriskie Point and Rufus.

Zabriskie Point is a viewing spot in Death Valley, California. It has great colors and shapes, it is interesting, but dull. So,I added a picture of a Rufus Hummingbird just to jazz it up a little. Last post on ABC Wednesday.

Y is for Yucca

Adopted as New Mexico's state flower in 1927, the Yucca has over forty varieties growing throughout the southwest and Mexico. These strange plants have to be pollinated by specific Yucca Moths. They have beautiful white flowers reaching to the sky, hence the spanish name "lamparas de dios" which translates to "lamps of the lord". Post # 25 on ABC Wednesday.

This picture was taken on the 4th of july, 2008 during a thunder storm in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Because of the delay it took 25 shots with my digital camera before I finally got this shot. I understand there is now a lightning sensor for your camera. My wife has a picture of lightning and fireworks in the shot on the same 4th of July. Post # 24 on ABC Wednesday.

W is for Windmill Workers

Yes, they really do work way up there on that little platform. There are windmills all over New Mexico, so windmill worker is probably a good job. Post # 23 on ABC Wednesday.

V is for very large array (VLA)

The VLA (very large array) is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, one of the world's largest Radio-Telescope array. Each 230 ton antenna is 82 feet in diameter. The 27 radio antennas are arranged in a Y shaped configuration on the plains of San Agustin about 20 miles west of Magdalena, New Mexico. Well worth a visit. Post # 22 on ABC Wednesday.

U is for Underwater.

This picture was taken last summer at the Albuquerque, New Mexico Zoo. The Polar Bears were playing in their pool and there is an underwater window. The picture could have been better if the glass in the window was cleaned a little more often. Post # 21 on ABC Wednesday.

T is for Three Rivers Petroglyphs

18 miles north of Tularosa, New Mexico on highway 54 is where you will find Three Rivers Petroglyphs. This is truly an amazing place, with a small campground and a trail up a small rock covered hill where there are over 20,000 petroglyphs (yes 20,000). When you get to the top of the hill they seem to be everywhere, in front of you, behind you, and on each side. The site is overseen by the BLM, and their brochure states that the people who did the petroglyphs are unknown, but there are two distinct styles, one is scratched and the other is chipped. Take a year and travel around New Mexico, you will love it. Post # 20 on ABC Wednesday.

S is for Sunset

The sunsets of New Mexico are spectacular, I chose three of my favorites. The first is from Percha Dam State Park about 17 miles south of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. A great spot for bird watchers.
The second shot was taken at Hidden Valley R V park in Tijeras, New Mexico about 5 miles east of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
This last picture is from Rockhound State Park in southern part of the state about 30 miles from the Mexican border. One of the better places to camp in New Mexico. I have taken many pictures of sunsets from all over this great state and they never cease to amaze me. Come see for yourself. Post # 19 on ABC Wednesday.

R is for Rodeo

The future rodeo stars of America learn their trade at the small town rodeos like this one in Escabosa, New Mexico, population less than 1000. The youngsters start learning at a tender age, some as young as 5 years old. They seem to have a great time. If you ever get a chance check out one of these small town rodeos. This is a picture of a Scaled Quail. This bird is a resident of most of New Mexico, after three years of full time RVing I was finally able to get this shot. New Mexico is a great birding state. Post #17 ABC Wednesday

P is for Petroglyph.

This Petroglyph is from the Painted Desert in Arizona. The Petrified Forest National Park is at mile marker 311 on interstate 40 about 22 miles west of Chambers,Arizona. The Painted Desert is part of this park. The park road is 29 miles long with turn-outs that have great views with fantastic colors. When I was there, there was free camping at the end of the road where it meets highway 15. Post # 16 on ABC Wednesday.

O is for Ocotillo.

The Ocotillo is one of the deserts strangest flowers, with tall skinny limbs that are six to twelve feet high and covered with very sharp needles. The flowers are on the end of the limbs and usually bloom after a rain storm or when watered by hand. Post # 15 on ABC Wednesday.

N is for Night Blooming

While visiting friends in Florence, MT, I was taken up to the attic to see this night blooming flower. I have never seen anything like this before, it was amazing, blooming in total darkness.

M is for Middle of Nowhere.

Eighteen miles south west of Hatch, New Mexico, famous for chili, is where Nutt,New Mexico is located, home of the Middle of Nowhere bar & Cafe. As the name implies, there is not much to see, but interesting as you drive by. post #13 on ABC Wednesday

L is for Lake Mendocino

Lake Mendocino is another great place to camp. Located in northern California about 8 miles north of Ukiah, California. The camp is run by the Army Corps of Engineers and is very well maintained. A wonderful place for hiking, fishing, boating or just relaxing. The birds and animals are every where and have little fear of people. Post # 12 to ABC Wednesday

K is for Keyhole State Park, Wy.

This is a beautiful place to camp, the lake is clear blue, the rock formations are great with many hiking trails and only 30 miles or so to Devils Tower. The picture was taken just coming on to sunset,the line of Geese was a bonus I did not expect. Post #11 to ABC Wednesday.

J is for Joshua Tree

These Joshua trees are amazing, they can grow out of the cracks in the rocks. This one is in the Jumbo Rocks campground. I could not make up my mind which picture to use, so I posted all three.
I did not think I could get a good sunset picture this close to the lights of Los Angeles, but I like this one.
These pictures were all taken at Joshua Tree National Park in California. The park is located in the desert between Twenty Nine Palms and Indio in southern California. this post # 9 on ABC Wednesday.

This lizard was walking across the parking lot in an RV park in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He had come out of a muddy field to dry off. I was going to wash him off with a hose, but he was too fast for me. This is post #7 on ABC Wednesday.

This sign is on the wall of Tinkertown, an amazing museum of one man's work. Ross J. Ward was the artist, sculptor, carver who created Tinkertown. His motto was " I created all this while you were watching television". This rambling museum has large hand carved dioramas of complete western towns, circus big tops and a world class collection of folk art and antiques, there is even a sailboat that a relative sailed around the world. Tinkertown is closed for the winter, and will re-open April 1 2009. Tinkertown is located north east of Albuquerque, New Mexico on highway 536 on the road to Sandia ski area. D is for Dog Canyon

Canon Del Perro, Canyon of the dog, is located 11 miles south of Alamogordo, New Mexico. During the indian wars between 1859 and 1881 Dog Canyon was the setting of more violence than any other locale in the west. Dog Canyon is one of the few canyons that has water. In 1881 the Apache chief Nana's band was the last of the hostile Apaches to camp in Dog Canyon before fleeing to Mexico. The canyon is part of Oliver Lee state park. Hmm; Oliver Lee there's a story for another time. This is my fourth post to ABC Wednesday.

C is for Canyon De Chelly

This picture of a cliff dwelling was taken from the ridge above Canyon De Chelly. You really have to go there to appreciate it. Canyon De Chelly is up in the north-east corner of Arizona. It is located on the Navajo Reservation, and thanks to the Navajo the camping is free. Take a tour into the canyon in a 4 wheel drive Jeep if you can. This is my third post to ABC Wednesday

B is for Bronze pouring.

This picture is of a bronze pouring at Shidoni Foundry a few miles west of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Shidoni Foundry has a great gallery and two large fields of metal statuary. Bronze pours occur every Saturday afternoon, viewers welcome. This is my second post to the ABC Wednesday group.

I have just joined this web group called ABC Wednesday. As my first picture I chose an Adobe house on Highway 1 in San Antonio, New Mexico. San Antonio is the home of the 7th best hamburger in the U.S.A. according to Gentleman's Quarterly and the boyhood home of Conrad Hilton.
